Italian prime minister Giorgio Napolitano, Italian president, starts consultations with parliamentary groups that are expected to lead to Silvio Berlusconi being sworn in as prime minister by the end of the week

Sudan reconstruction The World Bank and United Nations host a Sudan Consortium conference in Oslo to generate financial support for the development and reconstruction of southern Sudan (to May 7).

Sustainable development The 16th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development takes place in New York (to May 16), focusing on agriculture, rural development, drought, desertification and Africa.

World Bank conference The third IZA/World Bank conference on employment and development is held in Rabat, Morocco. Economists and policymakers will address recent economic and social changes in developing countries.

Barbados premier in China David Thompson, prime minister of Barbados, pays an official visit to China to meet Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, to discuss bilateral issues, with a focus on trade and investment.

Rice visits Czech Republic Condoleezza Rice, US secretary of state, attends a conference in Prague to continue discussions on plans for a US anti-missile shield to be sited in the Czech Republic.

FT China-Middle East conference The Financial Times, in association with First Eastern Investment Group, holds the FT China-Middle East Summit 2008 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is the second in a series of FT conferences on key opportunities and challenges surrounding the New Silk Road.

TUESDAY 6

Hu visits Japan Hu Jintao, the Chinese president, visits Japan (to May 10) to discuss North Korea’s nuclear policy and the dispute over gas field development in the East China Sea. Hu is the first Chinese head of state to visit Japan since 1998.

Council of the Americas The Council of the Americas annual conference is held in Washington DC (to May 7). George W. Bush, US president, and Martín Torrijos, president of Panama, are among those attending the event, which examines trade and development in the region.

Debating the EU’s future Ljubljana hosts the Europa Forum (to May 7) where delegates will discuss the future direction of the EU. Hans-Gert Pöttering, European parliament president, José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, and heads of state will attend.

US presidential primaries Voters in North Carolina and Indiana nominate Democratic presidential candidates. Victory for Barack Obama in Indiana would strengthen his position, while his defeat would offer fresh hope to Hillary Clinton.

Ahern departs office Bertie Ahern stands down from his posts as Irish taoiseach and leader of the Fianna Fáil party. Brian Cowen, former finance minister, replaces him.

Counter-terrorism policies The UN Security Council meets in New York to discuss counter-terrorism, with briefings by the chairs of the three council anti-terrorism committees

Arabian travel exhibition The Arabian Travel Market exhibition takes place in Dubai (to May 9). The event, in its 15th year, aims to promote the business potential of travel and tourism in the Middle East and pan-Arab region.

WEDNESDAY 7

New Russian president Dmitry Medvedev is inaugurated as Russian president. Vladimir Putin steps down after eight years and is set to become prime minister once approved by the State Duma lower house of parliament on May 8.

WTO meeting The General Council of the World Trade Organisation meets in Geneva (to May 8). The council will discuss the stalled Doha round of trade negotiations and the EU’s partnership with the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States.

US-Northern Ireland trade The US-Northern Ireland investment conference takes place in Belfast (to May 9), with Ian Paisley fulfilling his last official duty as Northern Ireland’s first minister before he retires.

Central America summit Central American presidents meet Venezuelan leader Hugo Chávez in Managua, Nicaragua, to discuss food programmes designed to counteract price inflation, and energy aid projects in South America.

Euro adoption The EC meets in Brussels to present its assessment on the progress of the 10 EU countries aiming to adopt the euro. Slovakia is also expected to get the go-ahead to join the eurozone.

Carbon market The Carbon Expo is held in Cologne, Germany (to May 9). Delegates will discuss carbon trading and the role of the carbon market.

BoE meeting The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee meets (to May 8) to decide whether to hold or cut interest rates with the aim of meeting the government’s inflation target of 2 per cent. The BoE if expected to make no change to the rate.

Nuclear power forum Massachusetts hosts the forum, An International Perspective on Making the Nuclear Renaissance a Reality. Delegates will discuss nuclear power’s role in the energy mix and speakers include Jonathan Temple, UK energy policy adviser.

iCI annual meeting The Investment Company Institute holds its 50th annual general membership meeting in Washington DC (to May 9) to discuss the mutual fund industry.

THURSDAY 8

Israeli independence Israel marks 60 years of independence according to the Hebrew calendar and George W. Bush is to attend celebrations. According to the Gregorian calendar, Israel’s independence is marked on May 14.

lGobal trade treaties Kamal Nath, Indian trade minister, is due to meet Susan Schwab, US trade representative, to discuss a new global trade regime after stalled Doha talks.

Gates visits Indonesia Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, attends the Government Leader Forum in Jakarta (to May 9). The forum will discuss the role of technology in developmentincluding education, health and the economic sector.

ECB meeting The Governing Council of the European Central Bank meets in Athens to set interest rates in the eurozone, and, like the BoE is expected to hold rates.

Arctic environment The NATO-Russian Advanced Research Workshop on The Influence Of Climatic Change On Arctic And Subarctic Changing Conditions is held (to May 10) to discuss the altered climate of the region and its consequences.

FRIDAY 9

Europe Day Europe Day is marked across the 27 EU member states to commemorate the day in 1950 when Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, presented a proposal – the Schuman declaration – for countries to pool coal and steel production as “the first concrete foundation of a European federation”. It is considered the beginning of the creation of what is now the EU.

SATURDAY 10

Burmese constitution A referendum on a new constitution takes place in Burma as part of the military junta’s seven-point “roadmap to democracy”, which it says is intended to culminate in multi-party elections in 2010.

SUNDAY 11

G8 talks on employment Employment ministers from G8 nations hold talks in Japan (to May 13) to discuss labour problems shared by developed countries.

Elections in Serbia Serbia holds parliamentary elections after the collapse of the governing coalition in March following differences over Kosovo and closer ties with the EU. Local elections will also be held, but Serbia has been warned any polls in Kosovo would breach its mandate on the country.
