MONDAY 19

Burma disaster aid Ministers from south-east Asian states meet in Singapore to form a strategy aimed at easing the plight of victims of cyclone Nargis in Burma. Foreign ministers from all 10 members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations have agreed to attend the special meeting, which will discuss the humanitarian situation and consider how best to assist the country’s relief and recovery efforts.

Biodiversity assessment Brunei will be welcomed as the 191st party to the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity at a global conference on the issue in Bonn (to May 30). The event aims to address the risk that a global reliance on three staple foods – wheat, rice and maize – will increase the likelihood of food shortages. It will conclude with a meeting of more than 100 ministers, opened by Angela Merkel, German chancellor.

Focus on health issues The World Health Assembly convenes in Geneva, bringing together representatives of the World Health Organisation’s 193 member states (to May 24). The assembly will discuss public health issues, including influenza pandemic preparedness, alcohol misuse and implications of climate change. It will also address the WHO budget and management matters.

Disaster resolutions Climate change will be on the agenda when the European Parliament holds a plenary session in Strasbourg (to May 22). The event will feature resolutions on China and Burma following their recent natural disasters and debates on Turkey’s progress towards joining the EU and next month’s EU/Russia summit.

TUESDAY 20

India/Pakistan talks Officials from India and Pakistan meet in Islamabad to review the fourth round of Composite Dialogue peace talks (to May 21). They will assess progress following discussions last year and deliberate how to move forward on issues including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

Renewable energy Al Gore, former US vice-president, delivers the opening speech at a conference entitled Renewable Energy and Beyond at Tel Aviv University (to May 21). The event will be attended by Shimon Peres, Israeli president, regional policymakers and heads of international agencies. It will examine the challenges and opportunities posed by renewable energy sources.

New Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou takes office as Taiwan’s president following elections on March 22. The Kuomintang candidate won 58 per cent of the vote, defeating Frank Hsieh of the ruling Democratic Progressive party. Mr Ma campaigned on a platform of economic reform and a more pragmatic attitude towards China.

US presidential primaries Voters in Kentucky and Oregon nominate their Democratic presidential candidate. Hillary Clinton is expected to win easily in Kentucky and Barack Obama in Oregon.

Georgian elections Georgia holds parliamentary elections following a referendum in January that brought the vote forward in the wake of anti-government street protests. President Mikheil Saakashvili’s ruling United National Movement looks likely to maintain its majority following changes to the electoral system in March that were criticised by opposition parties.

Palestinian investment The Palestine Investment Conference takes place in Bethlehem (to May 23), inspired by the international donor community’s three-year development plan for the territory. PIC-Palestine is sponsored by the Palestinian Authority and will showcase investment opportunities while looking at ways to strengthen public-private partnerships and reform the economy.

FRIDAY 23

Cypriot peace talks The Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders meet in Nicosia to discuss progress towards a peace settlement since the relaunch of talks in March. Demetris Christofias, president of Cyprus, and Mehmet Ali Talat, president of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, will examine any differences that have arisen within working groups made up of representatives from both sides, which have been meeting under the auspices of the United Nations.

Medvedev visits China Dmitry Medvedev, Russian president, visits China at the invitation of Hu Jintao, the country’s leader. The trip will be Mr Medvedev’s first since his inauguration on May 7 and includes a stop in Kazakhstan en route to Beijing. Both China and Kazakhstan are important trading partners for Russia.

Nato assembly session The Nato Parliamentary Assembly holds its spring session in Berlin (to May 27). Parliamentarians from the military alliance’s member states will discuss issues that includes energy security and relations with Russia, and Kosovo and security in the Balkans.

SATURDAY 24

G8 environment meeting Group of Eight environment ministers exchange views on global environmental issues, including climate change, when they meet in Kobe, Japan (to May 26). The Japanese government says the event is particularly important as it will prepare the ground for discussions during July’s G8 summit, which the country is also hosting.

Burmese constitution Cyclone-hit townships will take part in a referendum on a new constitution in Burma. The military junta delayed part of the vote from May 10 following the disaster. It claims voters in the first round were overwhelmingly in favour of keeping the army in power.

Cannes film festival The 61st Cannes International Film Festival closes, with actor Robert De Niro presenting the event’s main prize, the Palme d’Or.
