At the same time, ministers are scheduled to agree a negotiating mandate for the EU’s new bilateral agreement with Russia.

TUESDAY 27

Energy efficiency Government officials and industry experts from around the world meet in Geneva for a conference on international co-operation in energy efficiency. The event, organised by the Energy Charter Secretariat, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the International Energy Agency, will aim to strengthen co-operation in improving energy efficiency and tackling climate change.

Nepal abolishes monarchy Nepal’s Maoist-dominated constituent assembly votes to abolish the 240-year-old monarchy and turn the country into a republic in the wake of April 10 elections. Following the ousting of King Gyanendra, the 601-seat assembly will draft a constitution that will attempt to address the grievances of the marginalised groups that launched Nepal’s “people’s war” in 1996.

Labour conference The 97th International Labour Conference takes place in Geneva (to June 13). The event is the annual meeting of the International Labour Organisation’s 181 member states. The UN body will discuss its new report on freedom of association for workers and address issues including child labour and reducing poverty through promotion of rural employment.

European medical project A bid to put Europe at the forefront of medical research and healthcare will be launched at the European Parliament in Brussels. Fifty-one research centres and institutes will initiate the European Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure, a scheme to pool collections of human samples such as DNA and tissues to help prevent and treat complex diseases. Until now there has been little collaboration between archives and biobanks, making access difficult for scientists engaged in research.

The meeting will also provide ministers with an opportunity to review work on the Doha round of trade negotiations. Democratic decision The Democratic national committee meets in Washington to hear Hillary Clinton’s arguments for reinstating the debarred delegates from Florida and Michigan. Mrs Clinton would be unable to surpass Barack Obama’s lead in the nominations for Democratic presidential candidate even if she persuaded the party to seat the delegates. They were debarred because the two states broke the rules by holding their primaries earlier than agreed.
