UN food talks Members of the food and agriculture organisation of the United Nations meet for a European conference (to June 27).

Russian banking forum Market trends among Russian lenders are the subject of a Moscow event hosted by the Adam Smith Institute (to June 26).

Water week Ministers in charge of water resources from China to the United Arab Emirates convene in Singapore for the first International Water Week, a five-day conference about an increasingly valuable commodity.

EU-Opec energy dialogue Following Sunday’s extraordinary summit in Saudi Arabia, the EU’s energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs hosts the fifth round of ministerial talks between the EU and members of the oil producers’ cartel in Brussels.

Israel-Egypt summit Ehud Olmert, Israeli prime minister, travels to Egypt to meet president Hosni Mubarak to discuss “regional and bilateral issues” in the wake of the Hamas-Israeli truce brokered by Egypt.

African gathering Water and sanitation top the agenda when representatives of AU member countries meet for a week-long summit in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

Palestine conference Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German foreign minister, hosts a conference to support civil security and the rule of law in Palestine. The Middle East Quartet, the UN, EU, Arab League, Japan and Canada join members of the Palestinian and Israeli administrations.

Arroyo in the White House George W. Bush, US president, and his Philippine counterpart Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will discuss food security, Asean, Burma, terrorism, defence reform and regional economic integration at the White House.

Security Council on Sudan The escalation in the Darfur crisis will be discussed when Salim Ahmed of the AU and UN envoy Jan Eliasson brief the UN Security Council in New York.

Interdependence day Kofi Annan, former UN general-secretary, and James Hansen, director of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, are among King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s guests at the Tällberg Forum in Sweden, a worldwide gathering of decision-makers that will discuss global interdependence.

Refugee consultation Queen Noor of Jordan will open proceedings when 192 non-governmental organisations from 85 countries come to Geneva for a three-day consultation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

THUSDAY 26

Kyoto G8 meeting Foreign ministers from the US, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, Russia and the UK come to Kyoto ahead of the main summit next month in Hokkaido.

Monetary stability The Bank for International Settlements – the central bankers’ bank – meets for two days in Basel, Switzerland, to discuss monetary and financial stability.

Bird flu strategies Governments and private agencies will meet in Geneva to discuss global strategies to fight avian influenza (to June 27).

Monaco world summit The Mediterranean’s role as a crossroads between Europe, Africa and the Gulf will be discussed by representatives of governments, banking, trade and industry at the Crans Montana Forum in Monaco (to June 29).

Medvedev EU debut Russia’s new president Dmitry Medvedev attends his first EU-Russia summit, in Siberia (to June 27). He will discuss energy and trade with José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president.

US torture hearing David Addington, chief of staff to US vice-president Dick Cheney, must attend under subpoena a House judiciary subcommittee regarding alleged authorisation of torture practices in anti-terrorist interrogation. John C. Yoo, former deputy assistant attorney general, is to testify voluntarily at the Washington hearing.

Mandela’s 90th birthday Ex-world leaders, actors and rock stars party with the former South African president in Hyde Park, London, in aid of his HIV/Aids campaign. Nelson Mandela was born in 1918.

SUNDAY 29

Petrol congress Energy company chiefs consider “a world in transition” at the World Petroleum Congress in Madrid (to July 3).
