Doha talks Pascal Lamy, director-general of the World Trade Organisation, leads further Doha round discussions with trade ministers of WTO members about issues such as agricultural subsidies and the opening up of emerging market economies (to July 25).

Merkel in Ukraine Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, travels to Kiev for talks that are expected to focus on the former Soviet country’s aspirations to join the European Union and Nato.

Kosovo at the White House Fatmir Sejdiu and Hashim Thaci pay their first visit to the US as president and prime minister respectively of an independent Kosovo.

Ireland welcomes Sarko Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France, visits Dublin for talks with Brian Cowen, prime minister, about Ireland’s No vote in its referendum on the Lisbon treaty. France currently holds the EU presidency.

Pacific expansion Trade ministers and officials of the 16-member Pacific Islands Forum meet in the Cook Islands to discuss expanding trade and economic relations and future negotiations with Australia and New Zealand (to July 22).

Tin Lizzie centenary Ford celebrates 100 years since the first Model T rolled off the production line with a week of events hosted by the Model T Ford Club of America in Indiana. Some 1,000 Model Ts from as far away as Europe and Australia are expected (to July 26).

Santa congress More than 100 authorised Santas from around the world converge on an amusement park in Copenhagen to discuss their work and art. Festivities include a parade along Strøget, the Danish capital’s main pedestrian street.

TUESDAY 22

Rosenberg case revisited A district court in New York is due to hear the case for releasing grand jury records of the trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, executed in 1953 for passing nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union. Historians value grand jury hearings in that answers are unrehearsed and tend to be less guided by lawyers.

Kenyan leaders in London President Mwai Kibaki and prime minister Raila Odinga of Kenya visit the UK for talks with Gordon Brown and David Miliband, UK prime minister and foreign secretary (to July 23).

Bulgaria/Romania report The European Commission releases its corruption monitoring report on Bulgaria and Romania. The two countries, which joined the EU in January last year, have been criticised for alleged organised crime and corruption.

Mail bonding About 1,500 postal delegates from 191 countries come to Geneva for the 24th congress of the Universal Postal Union, established in 1874. The UPU, a specialised agency of the United Nations, sets rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in mail volume and improve service (to August 12).

Cape Verde in the WTO The west African state of Cape Verde becomes the 153rd member of the WTO.

Comic cuts The US’s biggest comic book and popular culture convention, Comic-Con International, opens in San Diego (to July 27). Fans can buy comic books and film memorabilia, watch previews of forthcoming films, attend publishers’ panels and meet artists and writers.

FRIDAY 25

EU-South Africa summit Nicolas Sarkozy meets President Thabo Mbeki in Bordeaux for an inaugural summit between the EU and South Africa. José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, also attends.

Cyprus talks President Demetris Christofias of Cyprus and Mehmet Ali Talat, the Turkish Cypriot leader, meet in the UN compound in Nicosia for talks aimed at resolving the long-running dispute over the island.

Bayreuth festival The 131-year-old event, devoted to the work of Richard Wagner, opens (and ends) with the German composer’s last completed work Parsifal. The festival, which runs to August 28, has an eight to 10-year waiting list for tickets.

UK-Japanese co-operation A conference of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies in London examines the history of UK-Japanese defence co-operation and the growing security relationship.

Fuji rocks The Fuji rock festival, which has become an important fixture on the international rock circuit, takes to the stage in Niigata, Japan. Artists appearing include Kasabian, My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream (to July 27).

Bulb honoured Gilroy, California, the self-proclaimed garlic capital of the world, holds a festival featuring food laced with two tonnes of fresh garlic, a garlic cook-off and musical and other entertainment (to July 27).

SATURDAY 26

Alzheimer’s conference Chicago provides the venue for the first International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, bringing together 5,000 researchers, physicians and care providers from 60 countries – the largest group ever convened (to July 31).

Marking Moncada Cuba celebrates the anniversary of Fidel Castro’s 1953 assault on the Moncada barracks, part of the build-up to his seizing power in 1959 and the key date in the revolutionary calendar. Illness prevented the former Cuban leader from attending last year.

SUNDAY 27

Non-Aligned conference Iran hosts the 15th ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran with President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad giving the opening address. Governments expected to attend include Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela and Pakistan (to July 30).
