Clinton speaks on Aids Bill Clinton, the former US president, travels to Mexico to give a keynote address at the International Aids Conference, where he holds talks with Ban Ki-moon on Aids prevention policy. He also attends the Clinton Climate Initiative Waste Management event as part of his annual tour to assess the progress of Clinton Foundation projects.

Advances in medicine Boston hosts the Drug Discovery Technology & Development World Congress (to August 7), at which delegates focus on ways to accelerate drug discovery and development.

Women’s rights Noeleen Heyzer, UN undersecretary-general and executive secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, hosts a forum in Bangkok on women’s empowerment. Bush travels to Asia George W. Bush, US president, visits South Korea and Thailand (to August 7) before attending the Olympic Games in Beijing. Mr Bush meets
Lee Myung-bak, his South Korean counterpart, and Samak Sundaravej, the Thai prime minister, for talks on bilateral relations.

Territorial agreement The Philippine government signs a territorial agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front regarding a homeland for about 3m Muslims in the south of the Philippines.

Fed guidelines The Federal Open Market Committee of the US Federal Reserve, chaired by Ben Bernanke, meets to set guidelines on the trading of government securities and to agree policy relating to system operations in foreign exchange markets.

Australian economy Angel Gurría, secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, visits Australia to meet political leaders for talks (to August 6) on developments in the local and global economy.

Toasting the tipple The Great British Beer Festival takes place at London’s Olympia. The event features more than 450 real ales from hundreds of different British brewers, including wheat beers, ginger ales, bitters, milds and stouts.

Hiroshima remembered Japans holds a ceremony at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima to remember the victims of the first nuclear bomb to be used in warfare. On Friday a service is held in Nagasaki to commemorate victims of the second atom bomb dropped on Japan in the same week in 1945.

Pöttering visits Syria Hans-Gert Pöttering, president of the European Parliament, visits Syria and Lebanon (to August 12) to meet political and religious leaders to discuss local and international developments.

THURSDAY 7

Energy security The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies holds a conference in Bangkok on climate change. Themes include energy security and remodelling Asia’s energy systems to adapt to the challenges of climate change.

Central banks meet The Bank of England monetary policy committee meets to set UK interest rates and the governing council of the European Central Bank meets to set rates for the eurozone.

‘8888 uprising’ anniversary Amnesty International supports a demonstration in London to mark the 20th anniversary of the national rebellion in Burma – known as the 8888 uprising because of the date it started – in which 3,000 demonstrators were killed.

Brunei fuel subsidies Brunei raises petrol and diesel prices for foreigners. The move has been prompted by the need to rein in mounting fuel subsidies.

Sentiment on Wall Street The San Francisco Money Show (to August 10) sees Wall Street’s investment experts discuss insights into the money markets and how to manage portfolios in uncertain economic times.

FRIDAY 8

Olympic opening China holds the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games (to August 24) at the National Stadium, Beijing. International politicians who are attending include George W. Bush and Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president. During his visit to China, Mr Bush will meet China’s President Hu Jintao to discuss North Korean denuclearisation and also Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, to discuss bilateral relations.

Kazakhstan-Jordan summit Jordan’s King Abdullah II visits Kazakhstan to meet President Nursultan Nazarbayev to discuss bilateral relations and the impact of and local and global political events.

OECD forecast The OECD announces its global economic indicator and standardised unemployment rates.

US Democratic policy The Democratic National Committee meets in Pennsylvania to adopt policies for the Democrats’ general election platform ahead of the national poll to be held in November.

SUNDAY 10

Bolivia vote of confidence Evo Morales, Bolivia’s president, holds a vote of confidence on his rule amid a power struggle between his government and the country’s provinces. The poll will also determine whether the vice-president and nine state governors retain office.

Edinburgh fetes culture The Edinburgh International Festival takes place (to August 31) featuring opera, classical music, theatre and dance events. The festival runs alongside the art and comedy events.
