Europe on Georgia The Council of Europe’s parliamentary assembly meets in Strasbourg (to October 3) to debate the consequences of the war between Georgia and Russia and the situation in Cyprus.

Lithuania-US parley Valdas Adamkus, president of Lithuania, travels to Washington to meet George W. Bush, the US president. Talks are expected to focus on developments in Belarus, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine as well as on energy security and Nato.

EU holds India talks Marseilles hosts a European Union-India summit where Manmohan Singh, Indian prime minister, meets Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, and José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, to discuss trade, energy issues and food security. Mr Singh and Mr Sarkozy will hold separate talks (September 30 to October 1).

Pakistan-US co-operation Representatives including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Pakistani foreign minister, and John D. Negroponte, US deputy secretary of state, meet in Washington to discuss co-operation between Pakistan and the US in areas from energy to counter-terrorism.

Nuclear collaboration Vienna hosts the annual International Atomic Energy Agency general conference (to October 4). Delegates discuss scientific and technical co-operation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Carbon trading The Carbon Markets India conference takes place in Mumbai (to September 30) with the focus on business opportunities in carbon markets and renewable energy projects in India.

Baltic briefing The Baltic Financial Forum meets in Riga (to September 30). Representatives discuss local economic policy issues and speakers include Ivars Godmanis, Latvian prime minister, and central bank governors from Latvia and Slovenia.

A fairer Europe The second European Equality Summit takes place in Paris. State officials meet representatives from business and charities in order to promote equality across the region.

EU development strategies An informal meeting of EU development ministers takes place in Bordeaux (to September 30) for talks on food security, climate change in developing countries and aid effectiveness following the Accra conference.

Getting connected Brussels hosts the Broadband World Forum Europe at which industry executives share their perspectives and experiences on broadband content (to October 2).

EU/ACP sessionThe annual EU/African, Caribbean and the Pacific Group summit takes place in Accra (to October 3) to discuss political and economic developments affecting Africa.

The world economy Angel Gurría, secretary-general for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, addresses a Council of Europe debate on the world economy in Strasbourg where delegates are also expected to discuss recent market events.

Iraqi citizen patrols The Iraqi government assumes responsibility for citizen patrols, known as “awakening councils” or “Sons of Iraq”, from US forces as part of a strategy to integrate the patrols into regular Iraqi security forces.

Defence discussions An informal meeting of EU defence ministers takes place in Deauville, France (to October 2). Officials from the 27 states discuss defence policies.

Investment banking The Banker Investment Banking Awards ceremony takes place in London. The awards, hosted by The Banker magazine, part of the FT group, focus on innovations in products, structures and strategies.

Climate and energy Connie Hedegaard, Danish minister for climate and energy, and Hilary Benn, UK environment secretary, debate at the London School of Economics hurdles facing a new global agreement on climate change .

Treasury management Barcelona hosts the EuroFinance conference where about 1,500 industry professionals meet to discuss international cash and treasury management (to October 3).

New UK minimum wage The minimum wage rises today by 3.8 per cent – a 21p increase to £5.73 per hour. The move will benefit about 1m workers, most of whom are women.

UK fuel rises The Treasury is to increase fuel duty by 2p litre. The rise was due in April but was postponed after rising petrol prices forced Alistair Darling, the chancellor, to abandon the planned increase.

ECB meets The ECB governing council meets in Frankfurt to set eurozone interest rates.

Short selling deadline America’s temporary ban on short selling, introduced by the Securities and Exchange Commission, ends.

Global campaign on terror London’s Whitehall hosts the International Terrorism Conference 2008 (to October 3) to discuss multilateral approaches in combating global terrorism.

Kosovan independence The parliament of Montenegro holds a special session in Podgorica to debate the recognition of the independence of Kosovo after opposition parties led by the Serbian community reacted angrily against a decision earlier this year to recognise its independence.

Caspian forum The leaders of Caspian Sea coastal states – Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Russia and Turkmenistan – meet in Astrakhan, Russia, to discuss developing joint investment areas for production and infrastructure projects.

Turkey in Europe The conference “Turkey’s Economic Integration to the EU: a response to global competition?” takes place in Paris, where representatives of the business community debate Turkey’s future as part of the economic bloc.

SATURDAY 4

Paris motors on The Paris Motor Show – Mondial de L’Automobile – takes place in Versailles (to October 19). More than 1m visitors are expected to attend the event, which is among the largest motor shows in the world.

SUNDAY 5

Bosnia-Herzegovina poll Bosnia-Herzegovina holds municipal elections to select local councils and mayors. For the first time since the end of the 1992-1995 war, voters will be able to elect ethnic minorities. These local elections are seen as an important indicator of the mood at the national level.

Business in London The International Business Advisory Council for London, set up by London mayor Boris Johnson, holds its inaugural meeting to devise strategies to promote business in the UK capital. The event, comprising 47 leaders from multinational companies, is chaired by Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP Group.
