So, this is my list of best albums of 2008 among other stuff. I originally planned to have this done by the 15 of January, but it took much more time than I expected. I hope that you not only don’t find it too tiring, but also have fun clicking links. F
Albums of 2008:
1. Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve Ark 1
Why?: Old mostly unknown psychedelic rock songs updated by Erol Alkan and someone else (can’t remember his name). If you haven’t bought it then all you can do is hope Rough Trade makes more copies.
Best Tracks: Electric Bananas // Aglarsa Anam Aglar // Bubble Burst // Winter in June http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxf-LeEc0uo
2. Devotchka - A Mad and Faithful Telling
I saw them live and they’re really good. The central theme of the album is God. I shiver when I listen to it for some reason.
Clockwise Witness // Transliterator // Blessing in Disguise // Undone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvpJdVhTwhg
Appalachian Beach Boys. Get the EP then the album.
Drops in the River (EP) // Mykonos (EP) // White Winter Hymnal (album) // He Doesn’t Know Why (album) // Your Protector (album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3r197bkkNo
4. Sonny J - Disastro
Really good stuff. Didn’t get the exposure it deserved.
Handsfree (If You Hold My Hand) // Can’t Stop Moving // Enfant Terrible
I love the video btw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d4L4hiSHNw
Good albums that almost made it, but are still worth a listen:
Welcome Wagon - Welcome to the Welcome Wagon
If you’re still waiting for something by Sufjan Stevens, get this album (he’s producer and arranger). Listen to the covers first, then check out the rest of the stuff.
Half a Person (Smiths) // Jesus (Velvet Underground) // Up on a Mountain // Sold to the Nice Rich Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Tzudi_i94E
Santogold - Santogold
I was expecting M.I.A., instead got something more similar to the Pixies.
Lights Out // L.E.S. Artistes // Say Aha // I’m a Lady
Another great video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwNkuw-YTVo
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Be patient, it gets better the more you listen to it, and it’s well worth the effort. Still reminds me of Ilkley Moor.
Skinny Love // For Emma // Creature Fear
Skinny Love w Jools Holland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfAS6nwYc9g
An easy introduction to the Animal Collective/Panda Bear style of music, only this has got Brazillian and African music in it as well. El Guincho sings in Spanish, but it took me dozens of listens to start understanding what he says. One last thing, he never mentions the words “amor” or “corazón.” Prez Lagarto // Palmitos Park // Kalise // Antillas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTJYj_uL1NQ
